Why is Orthodontic Treatment most common in adolescence?
Between the ages of 11 and 15 is the time when most children have acquired their complete set of permanent teeth. Dr. Newman will then be able to move these teeth into their proper position resulting in a lasting, healthy smile. Of course, Dr. Newman will only recommend orthodontic treatment to your child if it is needed! Teeth that develop in a crooked pattern or bad bite typically will not improve with time or growth. Therefore, adolescence is the preferred time to intervene with treatment.
Since orthodontic treatment usually occurs between ages 11 and 15, it is also most socially acceptable at this time. It is usually easier for students to go through treatment at the same time as their peers, and our office becomes another extracurricular bond in which classmates share a mutual participation. In fact, many children and teens will run into their friends during their orthodontic visits with us.
Aside from the many dental and health benefits associated with orthodontic treatment, orthodontic care at this age enables adolescents to enter their maturation period with a beautiful, confident smile. Some of the health benefits of orthodontic treatment are that straight teeth are easier to clean, they collect less plaque and prevent the opportunity for decay and gum disease. Properly aligned teeth alleviate stress on the supporting gum and bone structure, as well as preserving teeth from unbalanced wear. The most significant benefit of undergoing orthodontic treatment in adolescence is that it sets the individual patient up for a lifetime of easier, less costly dental maintenance, along with a beautiful smile and peace of mind from each of these.
