what-to-expect

When your braces are first placed, they may feel a little strange, like they “stick out.” This is normal. This feeling will go away once you have gotten used to your braces and tooth alignment begins to improve.

If you have any irritation from the braces, it may be helpful to apply a small piece of wax on your brackets until the inside of your lips and cheeks have gotten used to the brackets. This can take about 3-14 days.

You may have some slight discomfort, soreness and sensitivity after your braces have been placed. You can take over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or Tylenol, as needed for two to three days after initial banding. Anything that you take for a headache, will work well.

The day you get your braces on, our staff will spend quite a bit of time to instruct you on brushing, flossing, general care of your braces, what foods to avoid and how to handle any minor problems, should they arise.

Make sure to take good care of your braces. Damaged braces and wires can increase the length of your treatment process, so be sure to follow our instructions on taking care of your braces. Your teeth and jaws will only move into their correct positions if you consistently wear the rubber bands, headgear, retainer, or other appliances prescribed by us.
